Diablo 4’s impending release has come with much jubilation from the fans, especially after the end of the recent Server Slam that gave players free game time to test the game’s online servers, albeit restricted to the early stages of the story only.
That being said, nothing is perfect, most notably when it comes to games that are just about to release, so what are the gripes that certain fans have about Diablo 4 that could still be improved upon at the moment?

1. MAP OVERLAY
Over the years since Diablo 3, more mainstream ARPGs, such as PoE, have streamlined their gameplay by introducing certain changes to make things more convenient for players, especially for the end game.
One such innovation is the map overlay which provides a transparent view of the overall map, on top of your actual gameplay.

Without it, you will need to manually open the map by pressing its key mapping, requiring you to memorise the next POI (point of interest) that you want to go to.
For casual players who want to focus on immersion, this works fine for the first few times, plus the mini-map located at the edge of the screen.

2. HEALTH AND MANA BARS
For many real-time strategy (RTS) games, health bars and ability bars (mainly for spellcasters) are already becoming standard, especially for another genre of video games, MOBA.
Although ARPGs like Diablo 4 aren’t categorised the same, they arguably share many common gameplay elements.
Instead of constantly glancing at your red health pool to gauge how close you are to dying, the use of an overhead HP bar and Mana gauge on your character can help you save precious milliseconds that you need to evade dangerous, 1-hit kill swipes from your enemies.
Again, even if the publishers see no real value of doing this – to which MANY players would disagree with – putting it as a toggle-able option would be a tremendous quality-of-life improvement!
3. CLASS BALANCING
Now, this is an extremely touchy point, but some classes still need minor combat tweaks made to their abilities and stats.
For instance, in the middle of Server Slam, the developers had to apply an impromptu patch to improve the Necromancer class after receiving numerous complaints regarding the latest nerfs made to it.
Although it’s always better to be late than never, this shows that class balancing issues might persist until launch, so you need to keep your expectations real if you want to enjoy your preferred class choice, at least until a few months later after eventual hotfixes would have been added post-launch.
4. LEARNING CURVE
For many fans, Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 were probably the most hardcore titles in the franchise, considering the power scaling disparities of classes, more punishing enemies, and general system limitations of the time.
Nowadays, most games are created to cater to a more universal audience, and this includes Diablo 4 as well.
So, during the Server Slam, many players have found that the learning curve can be somewhat steep, generally starting out as beginner-friendly but quickly turning into a hard wall if they don’t build their character in specific ways or wear proper gear sets, limiting freedom and creative combinations.
This might be different upon release, though, considering that certain modifiers have been temporarily changed for Server Slam, to ensure that the actual experience later on would be a more enjoyable one.
Since the primary aim of the Server Slam is to test the robustness of the game’s online servers, there’s still hope that the difficulty spike isn’t as troublesome as initially thought, but it’s always better to just be safe than sorry.
These are just a few concerns that most players have pointed out, but things can always be different once Diablo 4 actually reaches shores on 6th June next month.
