Floyd Mayweather beats Andre Berto handily to go to 49-0

If it was his last time in the ring, it wasn’t exactly the most memorable farewell. But Floyd Mayweather did what he always does, and that’s win, as he handled an overmatched Andre Berto with ease tonight, scoring a routine 12-round decision on scores of 117-111, 118-110, and 120-108. SB Nation had the fight 120-108 for Mayweather.

Mayweather (49-0, 26 KO) said before the fight that this would be the last of his career, though few believe that will be the case. At age 38, Mayweather reiterated after the fight that his career is over. “That’s official,” he said. “Berto was a tough competitor. He’s a very athletic boxer. What can I say? I was the better man tonight.”

Showtime’s Jim Gray pushed the question a little bit, but Mayweather kept firm that this was the end for his career.

“You’ve got to know when to hang it up. I think it’s about time for me to hang it up. I’m knocking at the door now,” Mayweather said. “I’m close to 40 years old. Been in this sport 19 years. I’ve broken all the records. There’s nothing more to prove.”

Mayweather noted that he’s made $700 million in his career, and that he’s made “great investments,” and is ready to retire. Whether or not that stands — he’s retired before, after all — remains to be seen.

Berto (30-4, 23 KO) was absolutely no match for Mayweather, as he wasn’t able to do the few things that we’ve seen give Floyd any problems over the years. Nothing about the matchup favored Andre Berto, and he wasn’t able to have any real success in this fight.

“Experience played a big part,” Berto said of the loss. “As you can see, I was in shape, but he was just really difficult to hold on to. He’s slippery. Experience played a big part. I used a lot of speed, but he’s real crafty, man. He was using little things just to kind of get me off my rhythm.”

If this was it, then it was it. If not, we’ll see Floyd Mayweather again next year, once a potential bidding war breaks out for his 50th fight.
