Janine Lowy’s Insight into Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari and Nora Lifshitz
As the war in Israel continues in the wake of Hamas’ devastating October attacks, it’s easy to feel a sense of helplessness and hopelessness, but, according to Janine Lowy, it’s crucial to take a step back and appreciate some of the incredible acts and everyday heroes.
“As a proud Zionist with deep ties to Israel, I deeply understand the pain and heartbreak many are experiencing,” Lowy said. “But it’s so important that we try to find moments of light despite the ongoing crisis. The Jewish culture is one of immense resilience, and there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate that.”
Last month, Lowy shared Israel21c’s The Unexpected Heroes series, which celebrates the ordinary Israeli citizens who have exemplified bravery and courage while serving their communities after last month’s attacks. Lowy has selected two other stories for us to highlight, encouraging the world to stay connected to the events in Israel.
“The stories of ‘normal’ Israeli citizens rising up to demonstrate incredible courage are so inspiring,” Lowy said. “The Unexpected Heroes page continues to get updated with new stories. It’s helpful to read through these whenever you—or your loved ones—could use a dose of positive news.”
Below, Lowy shares a new selection of the stories that resonated most:
The Man Explaining It All: Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari
Before the war broke out, few people in Israel had heard of Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari. Today, the IDF spokesperson is a household name. Hagari gives frequent press briefings—in both English and Hebrew—to share news about the war and accompanies foreign journalists on press tours. Israelis describe him as “articulate, brave, and charmingly modest.”
“The way he clearly explains painful news and addresses difficult questions has a calming effect, despite the tragedy,” Lowy said. “He lets his personality shine through and has become a trusted figure during these uncertain times.”
Animal Rescuer: Nora Lifshitz
Before the war, animal activist Nora Lifshitz worked with injured Israeli fruit bats. But since October 7th, she has pivoted to caring for the animals affected by the brutal attacks. Lifshitz has made many trips to Israel’s south, where she’s rescued a host of animals, including dogs, cats, turkeys, birds, rabbits, and goats.
“Hamas’ brutality has affected so many in countless ways, including animals,” said Lowy. “Both the animals themselves and their owners have suffered. But Nora Lifshitz is addressing and calling attention to that piece of this tragedy.”
