Windstream isn’t the biggest ISP in the nation, nor is it the fastest. But in rural areas with no cable networks, it’s without a doubt the best internet service you can get.
I’ve used both DSL and fiber services from Windstream in different areas. The fiber service, well, it’s fiber—it’s reliable, fast, symmetrical, and essentially the best type of internet service you can get today. The DSL service is not perfect, but it has gotten pretty good in the last couple of years.
I’m going to give you my thoughts on Windstream Internet based on my experience. Let me start with the good stuff.
What I Like About Windstream Internet
High-Speed Internet
Satellite and fixed wireless access are typically your only options in rural areas. Both of these have very low speeds that don’t allow for anything more than the most basic internet tasks. Windstream Internet is a huge step up these services with speeds up to 100 Mbps.
In select areas, Windstream offers state-of-the-art fiber-to-the-home internet with symmetrical speeds ranging from 500 Mbps and 8 Gbps. If Windstream Fiber is available where you live, you can bet it’s the fastest internet service you can get.
Reliability
Windstream’s commitment to reliability is nothing short of legendary in my book. As someone who relies heavily on a steady internet connection for work and play, I can’t emphasize enough how crucial it is to have a provider like Windstream.
Internet interruptions and downtime? Rare occurrences in my Windstream world. They’ve got their infrastructure game on point, making sure I can work, stream, and video calls with nary a glitch.
Multiple Plans
Granted, in most areas, Windstream provides DSL internet service with a single 100 Mbps plan. But where it has fiber, it offers plans ranging from 500 Mbps to 8 Gbps. Whether you want a reliable connection on a budget or wish for super-fast downloads at colossal speeds, Windstream is the provider you turn to.
Broad Coverage
Windstream isn’t just another run-of-the-mill provider; they’re on a mission. A mission to bring high-quality internet to the forgotten corners of rural America, like my own community. It provides DSL internet service in 18 states and is working on bringing fiber internet to more areas.
Bundling Options
Let’s talk about convenience and cost-effectiveness. Windstream partners with digital service providers such as DIRECTV and YouTubeTV to offer bundles that combine internet with phone and TV services. The fact that they’re dedicated to providing comprehensive digital solutions shows that Windstream is in it for the long haul.
No Data Caps
Let’s face it, data caps are just a way to get you to pay more disguised as a “network management practice.” But Windstream’s got your back unlimited data on all internet plans. That means you can binge-watch your favorite shows, download entire libraries, and host marathon gaming sessions without worrying about surprise charges or a slowdown in your digital groove.
99.9% Reliability
Windstream’s boast of a 99.9% reliability rate isn’t just bragging; it’s a declaration of war against downtime. In my experience, that means a virtually hiccup-free internet connection that’s as dependable as the sunrise. With Windstream, you can always count on a silky-smooth online experience, which is a digital dream come true.
Mesh WiFi Extenders
My biggest problem with WiFi routers has been their coverage. Even the most powerful routers leave WiFi dead spots where the signals are just too low to do anything. Mesh WiFi technology gets around this issue by using multiple routers as part of the same WiFi network. Windstream adapts this technology with Kinetic Wi-Fi Mesh Extenders that connect to the Kinetic Gateway and eliminate dead spots.
What Can Be Better
Overall, I’m satisfied with Windstream Internet, but I think there are areas where it can still improve. Some of these are:
Fiber Availability
Windstream offers its DSL product in most of its service areas. While it’s better than satellite and FWA, not it’s not as fast as cable and fiber internet. However, it is working to bring fiber internet to more areas, such as with its recent $7.2 million investment in the Fiber-Internet Project in Chattooga County
Upload Speeds
Windstream’s DSL service has slower upload speeds compared to download speeds, which can be a drawback for users who need to upload large files or engage in video conferencing and online gaming. However, for most people, download speeds are far more important.
Price Consistency
Windstream Internet prices vary by location. Although I understand that operating networks in some areas may be costlier for Windstream in others, I would prefer if I could get the same price everywhere.
In the next section, I talk about the current offers on Windstream Internet. But note that the prices may be higher or lower depending on your area. My advice is to call Windstream customer service directly for more accurate pricing.
